Jamaica: Beyond the Big Resort

Blue Hole in Jamaica

Are you interested in Jamaica but concerned about safety and being confined to an all-inclusive resort? Ya mon!

Here’s a few tips to help you explore safely.

  • You don’t have to avoid the big resorts entirely. Begin your journey at one of Montego Bay’s kid-friendly resorts, such as the Jewel Grande, so the kids can be entertained by all the onsite activities, three pools, and private beach while you enjoy a Red Stripe and stare out into the turquoise Caribbean.

  • While in Montego Bay, book a tour to the Luminous Lagoon for some night swimming among the glowing dinoflagellates. Book directly with Glistening Waters and they’ll pick you up at your Montego Bay resort and drive you roughly 45 minutes to Falmouth.

  • To experience the adventurous region of Ocho Rios without a big tour group, rent a car and drive east along the coastline for roughly 2 hours. We had a great experience with the local Dhana Car Rental – they’ll even transfer you from your resort. Keep in mind that like many former British colonies, they drive on the left side of the road. Once there, head to your hotel and don’t explore Ocho Rios alone — this is an area plagued by low-level crime.

  • Stay at the Hermosa Cove, a hidden coastal gem that exceeded all our expectations. This private oasis is perfect for large families as it offers authentic Caribbean villas with multiple bedrooms and private pools, cascading infinity pools, a private beach, and onsite restaurant featuring fresh, local favorites like curry goat, oxtail, and ackee and saltfish (along with jerk chicken, of course). If I did it again, I would spend more time at this magical cove and less at the busy, touristy resort.

  • A trip to Jamaica wouldn’t be complete without a hike up the touristy Dunn’s River Falls. Prepare yourself for tour buses and large crowds since this is the main attraction for cruise ships. But it’s a fairly easy hike to the top for 5-yr-olds and our kids enjoyed it. Visit late afternoon to avoid the crowds.

  • For a less touristy adventure, go to the Blue Hole for a 25ft waterfall plunge into a natural limestone sinkhole. (We preferred this to Dunn’s River Falls.) Unlike the Dunn’s River Falls, the Blue Hole is less touristy and harder to find, so I recommend hiring a tour guide, such as Chris Tours Jamaica. Chris picked us up from our villa, helped us navigate Ocho Rios safely, and even took us to his favorite spot for Jamaican patties.
