Top 5 Must-Do Adventures in Ireland
1. Hike the Cliffs of Moher.
Do you want to avoid the tourist buses and take the lesser-seen views of the Cliffs of Moher? Then park on Fisher Street in Doolin and folllow the cliff-hugging trail to Liscannor with dramatic seascape along the way. This exhilarating adventure allows you to experience the dramatic cliffs up close, where sheer drops plunge into the Atlantic Ocean. You’ll meander through lush fields with grazing cattle and panoramic vistas of the rugged coastline. For me, this was the most unforgettable experience in Ireland and presented all of Ireland’s beauty. (Total length: 9 miles (14 km), roughly 4 hours.) Lesson Learned: Turn around before you get to the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre to avoid the overcrowded, nearly impassable part of the trail. The hike south from Doolin offered more stunning panoramics, so save yourself some time and avoid the tourists.
2. Bike in Killarney National Park.
Biking through Killarney National Park offers a breathtaking way to explore its stunning landscapes — from ancient woodlands, to shimmering lakes, and the majestic peaks of Ireland’s tallest peaks, the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. Rent bikes at O’Sullivan’s Cycles and hop right on a leisurely bike path into the park for a roughly 12 mile loop. Along the way, you’ll encounter many historical sites, including Muckross House, Castlelough Castle, and Ross Castle. Pack lunch and stop on the lush green lawn in front of Muckross for a scenic picnic spot.
3. Stay in a Castle.
A castle stay offers a unique blend of history, luxury, and enchanting surroundings. With so many stunning options, it’s hard to choose. We landed on Ashford Castle becasue we wanted to indulge in quintessential luxury for our last night. From the moment you enter the stone gates, you feel like you’re in a fairy tale. The Castle is set on 350 stunning acres and offers the perfect mix of charm, luxury, history, and adventure. Be sure to borrow a bike and explore the grounds and neighboring village of Cong.
4. Experience the Book of Kells.
Even though Trinity College wasn’t initially on our Dublin itinerary, this prestigious university ended up being one of our favorite experiences. Ireland’s oldest university boasts beautiful architecture and is home to the Book of Kells, an exquisite medieval manuscript created by Celtic monks in the 9th century. The Long Room of the Old Library is also a sight to behold. Be sure to book tickets for the library tour and Book of Kells Experience in advance as it sells out!
5. Visit the Guinness Storehouse.
A trip to Ireland wouldn’t be complete without learning about the history and creation of Ireland’s iconic beer. Located in the heart of the St. James’s Gate Brewery, the Guinness Storehouse offers a captivating journey through the story of the famous stout, the brewing process, and the rich history of Guinness. The highlight of the tour is the Gravity Bar, where you can enjoy a perfectly-poured pint and take in 360-degree views of Dublin’s skyline.
By no means is this list exhaustive! These experiences are a mere fraction of Ireland’s countless adventures. Please comment on YOUR favorite Ireland experience.
